Background  History

A sister of Mercy Commercial College Miguta was established in 1968 by the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy with the help of CAFOD England. At the time, there was great need for trained secretaries to work in the Government Institutions, the civil service, in schools and in various other places. The College was started with the aim of providing courses especially the Secretarial training to students for the development of skills necessary for the employment in the public, private and local sectors. The major beneficiaries were the girls from the neighboring communities who could not find places in other courses or learning institutions by then.

The College has been in existence for more than forty years, having trained thousands of secretaries who are today holding key positions in the public and private sectors in the country. The impact and fruits of the College continues to be felt by the society- near and far- as more young ladies continue to enroll and acquire the skills needed for them to secure the Secretarial jobs in the different organizations today.

In its early years, the students sat for Pitman’s examination at the end of their training, things changed from 1972 when the students began sitting for the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) examinations.

Lately, the course is done in Modules (Stages) whereby there is a national exam at the end of each course. Students have to pass the exams in each stage for them to proceed to the next. The students have performed exceptionally well in the past KNEC examinations and have found employment in government Ministries, banks, private companies and church organizations.

College Stake Holders and Management

A sister of Mercy Commercial College is managed by The Congregation of Sisters of Mercy who are the Trustees and financiers of the college.  The College has a Board of Management which assists in the management of the college. The institution has the Principal, Deputy Principal, Head of Departments and the Staff both teaching and non-teaching.

The other stake holders involved in the college is the community surrounding the college who are very supportive.  They send their sons and daughters in the institution to study. There are also the parents and guardians who sponsor the students through paying their fees.

The Students have students’ representatives in each and every class.  The representatives communicate class issues to the class teacher.

Courses Offered

Since its inception in 1968, only one major course- Secretarial Studies- has been offered by the College.

Over time, a need to offer more courses in addition to the Secretarial Studies has been felt, following the demand for more skilled personnel in the organizations. This being the only registered commercial college in Githunguri Sub-county, students from the neighborhood have had the challenge of travelling far to enroll for Business Courses in other learning Institutions.

The College was therefore allowed and registered by the Ministry of Education to offer Diploma and Certificate training in the following courses:

  • Secretarial Studies
  • Information Communication Technology
  • Human Resource Management
  • Business Administration
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Accounts Technician Diploma (ATD)
  • Computer Packages.

The College has started offering the new courses and currently we have two students enrolled for ICT class.  There is intention to start offering the other courses in January 2018 as the marketing process of informing the general public has already rolled out. The College is looking forward to registering students for Business Administration, Human Resource and Accounts Technician Diploma in January 2018.  Supply Chain Management will be introduced gradually
